Why do I need admin approval to connect SmartDeploy to OneDrive?

Some users may receive a "Need admin approval" prompt when connecting SmartDeploy to OneDrive. Read below to learn why this occurs, and how to resolve it.

Microsoft's OneDrive cloud storage service allows users to connect applications to OneDrive in order to allow them to interact with files in OneDrive. SmartDeploy supports OneDrive and OneDrive for Business as sources for cloud deployment.

When you connect to any of the supported cloud services on SmartDeploy for the first time, you will be prompted to allow the app to access your cloud storage account. This permission must be granted if you wish to use SmartDeploy to read and write files in your cloud storage account, which is necessary to perform cloud deployments.

If you are using OneDrive for Business, your organization's security settings may or may not allow you to approve the app as a user within that tenant. If your organization's security settings allow you to approve the app, you may do so without any assistance. However, you may receive a prompt similar to the one below, indicating that you Need admin approval, and that PDQ.com needs permission to access resources in your organization that only an admin can grant.

If this occurs, you will need to contact your Microsoft 365 tenant administrator (if you're not sure who this is, contact your organization's IT department or network administrator) to approve your request. For more information about the admin consent workflow within Microsoft online services, see this Microsoft KB article:

If your tenant administrator would prefer to grant admin consent for a particular application for all users within your tenant, they may do so using the instructions below. Please note that granting tenant-wide consent to the SmartDeploy application is not required by SmartDeploy - they may approve requests on a per-user basis if preferred.

Please note, there are many security settings available in Microsoft's online services, and sometimes they behave in unexpected ways. If you are seeing any unexpected behavior, or if you are still unable to use OneDrive as a cloud deployment source with SmartDeploy after your admin grants permission for the app, contact SmartDeploy Support.
