Updating the SmartDeploy Client

This article contains screenshots of the SmartDeploy Web Console (click here for more info).

The actions described can also be performed in the desktop console.

This guide describes how to update the SmartDeploy Client using the SmartDeploy Web Console.

Starting with SmartDeploy version 3.0.2048 the SmartDeploy application is no longer backward compatible with client versions older than release 3.0.2048. This is due to the certificate renewal outlined in this document.
Update required: PDQ product certificate rotation occurred October 20, 2025

Best practice is to keep your client agent version up to date with your console version to ensure the client is able to support all of the features of the current console release.

Note: You can see the current version of the SmartDeploy console by looking at the bottom left of the Web console or the bottom right of the tools page in the Desktop application.

To see the currently installed SmartDeploy client versions, scroll right in Computer Management until you can see the Client Version column. You can also launch appwiz.cpl on a given endpoint, and check the installed version of the SmartDeploy Client.

Step 1- Computer Management

Log in to the SmartDeploy Web Console and navigate to the Computer management page.

Step 2 - Select Device(s)

Select the device or device(s) that need the SmartDeploy Client update by ticking the box next to the endpoint hostname.

Step 3 - Update Action

Open the device actions menu to access client update options. Choose the Update Client option to initiate the upgrade process.

Step 4 - Select a distribution point

For endpoints with a local connection type, select a local distribution point. For clients with a cloud connection type, select a cloud distribution point. After selecting the appropriate distribution point, click the "Update" button.
Note: If you are updating more than one endpoint, all of the selected endpoints need to be of the same connection type. For example, they should all be a local connection type or all be a cloud connection type.

Step 5 - Update Initiated

The system will initiate the update, and display a banner at the top, indicating the update has been initiated. You will also see the status column display a clock icon that indicates the update has been scheduled.
